Reporting to the Senior Fisheries certification Manager, the Policy Officer will be assisting with implements the MSC’s policies and procedures for the assessment of fisheries against the MSC’s Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Fishing (the MSC Standard). In particular the Project Officer is responsible for supporting the Fisheries team with delivery of some specific projects related to the MSC scheme.

Required skills

Technical

Post-graduate degree or equivalent in a fisheries or marine environment discipline – e.g. environmental law or policy, environmental technology, ecological economics, marine or fisheries conservation will be an advantage.

  • A good understanding of sustainable development issues especially as they relate to wild capture fisheries and the work of the Marine Stewardship Council.
  • Relevant experience in research or policy development and/or analysis an advantage.
  • Evidence of a good level of computer literacy, including use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat). Evidence of the use of information systems and databases an advantage. Common sense and a willingness to learn web site administration.

Stakeholder-oriented

  • An ability to develop stakeholder contacts and build and maintain good relationships.
  • An understanding of the issues that may be of importance to different stakeholders in the MSC programme, especially environmental and conservation stakeholders.
  • Management and Organisational Abilities
  • Highly organised and a preference for paying attention to detail, while remaining aware of the overall mission and vision of the organisation and your contribution to it.
  • The ability to be self-managing and self supporting, while also providing key support to more senior members of the team.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgement and demonstrate initiative to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Well-developed computer and IT skills, including the use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Adobe Acrobat). Relevant and competent use of electronic information systems and databases.

Communication

  • Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) and personal presentation.
  • Evidence of an ability to manage relationships – with colleagues, stakeholders or others as appropriate.
  • Team Player
  • Enthusiasm about contributing to MSC-wide responsibilities and development, where appropriate.
  • A clear capacity to engage with people at all levels.

Salary: £24,00 - £ 26,000 dependent on experience
