NEPCon opens consultation on new carbon standard

NEPCon has opened up the initial stakeholder consultation on the draft version of its Carbon Footprint Management Standard. Submit your comments up until 6 August.

NEPCon is a partner of the Rainforest Alliance with core expertise in the area of forest management. It works with various sustainability standards in the forestry sector and offers training and certification services to forest operations and companies on the road to certification.

The main objective of NEPCon’s Carbon Footprint Management Standard is to contribute to additional carbon reductions in the private sector and hence to mitigate global climate changes. This objective is pursued by establishing a simple but ambitious standard serving as a guiding tool for companies to monitor and manage their carbon emissions and show real commitment towards reduction and offsetting of carbon emissions in a longer perspective.

NEPCon’s Carbon Footprint Management Standard is based on principles and requirements used in internationally recognized GHG accounting standards, such as the GHG Protocol standards and the PAS2050 and 2060 standards, while keeping a clear focus on the auditability of the standard, transparency toward external stakeholders and comparability between companies applying the standard.

The Carbon Footprint Management Standard provides a robust framework for making carbon footprint management an affordable, feasible and attractive task. It is intended to support companies in the timber and paper sector, and small and medium sized enterprises in particular, but can be applied by organisations of all sizes and within all sectors.

With this standard NEPCon wants to create a strong incentive for carbon reductions, promote the use of forest carbon credits and consolidate carbon performance as a key performance indicator for the private sector.

Invitation to join consultation

NEPCon would like to invite your comments and suggestions to this draft standard. Upon completion of the consultation process, and necessary changes to incorporate comments, this standard will be offered to companies seeking certification of their carbon footprint management efforts. The consultation closes on 6 August 2012.

The standard can be downloaded here or and further information can be found on the consultation page here.

NEPCon hopes that this standard provides an ambitious, well-defined and practical entry point for companies that wish to improve their sustainability performance and reach ambitious emission reduction targets.
