Alliance for Responsible Mining

The Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) is an independent, global-scale, pioneering initiative established in 2004 to enhance equity and wellbeing in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) communities through improved social, environmental and labour practices, good governance and the implementation of ecosystem restoration practices.

ARM's mission is to set standards for responsible ASM and to support and enable producers to deliver "fairmined" certified metals and minerals through economically just supply chains to the markets, in order to contribute towards the transformation of ASM into a socially and environmentally responsible activity, and to the improvement of· the quality of life of marginalized artisanal miners, their families and communities.

ARM is committed to social justice and environmental responsibility as the values driving the transformation of ASM and is fully committed and aligned with ISEAL’s mission and values. ARM’s scope of operation is the extractive industries, with special emphasis on artisanal and small-scale mining, value chain from mine to market of mineral raw materials, with special emphasis on gold. ARM primarily works in standard setting, producer support and communications.

Fairtrade International and Alliance for Responsible Mining end partnership on gold

The organisations had been engaged in a multi-year partnership to implement a shared vision of better conditions for artisanal and small-scale miners. After a review process the organisations have decided to phase out the Fairtrade and Fairminded dual label in favour of a more flexible model of co-operation for the future.

Recognition of Fairtrade gold standard to benefit artisanal miners

Responsible Jewellery Council recently announced a decision to recognise Part A of the Fairtrade and Fairminded Standard as a Responsible Mining Standard under the RJC Chain of Custody (COC) Standard for precious metals, signalling a commendable example of coordination amongst certification programmes in the jewellery supply chain.
