Paddy Doherty

Paddy is ISEAL's Code Development Manager

I joined ISEAL in September 2008 and have seen rapid development of the organisation since that time. I have managed the development of the ISEAL Impacts Code and associated learning materials, the ISEAL Assurance Code, the ISEAL Research Network, and participated in the ISEAL Stepwise Report. My work brings me in close contact with technical people working in ISEAL members’ systems. I enjoy and value the cross-systems learning that occurs during a stakeholder consultation process. I have a particular interest in reducing jargon and using plain language in my work.

Before ISEAL...

I worked for four years running a project to develop an organic regulation for Canada – the first new agricultural programme in Canada in 50 years. During this time I learned valuable lessons about how to run a successful stakeholder consultation. Before this I worked as a policy analyst in the organic sector in British Columbia. In this capacity I learned how to reach successful outcomes when interacting with different levels of government.

Ask me about:

Certification or verification, standards setting, claims and labelling issues, and anything related to credible practice for standards.

Not all standards are created equal

The sustainability standards movement is still relatively young, so it is not surprising that different models of standards systems have emerged as people experiment with how to get the most out of this market-based tool.

New Directions for the Organic Movement

Many of us experience a kind of epiphany when we turn 40; a realisation that life is short and the things we used to think were so important are perhaps not quite so anymore. This has been no different for the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) at its 40th birthday. However, instead of buying a sports car or going on a trek through Nepal, IFOAM has fostered a Sustainability Camp.

Consultation common sense

After completing a 21-month multi-stakeholder consultation for the Assurance Code a colleague asked me to share my learning from the process. Here are a few of my personal tips for managing a consultation processes:
