IOAS is an independent, non-profit organisation that is committed to cultivating integrity and trust across the organic community. It does this primarily by providing accreditation and assessment services to certification bodies working in organic agriculture.

IOAS currently works as the sole provider of accreditation against IFOAM Norms and is heavily engaged in working in collaboration with regulators of the organic trade on international and national levels. It carries out assessments for the European Union Recognition Programme, for the Canada Organic Regime and for Food Safety scheme accreditation including Global G.A.P. It also provides accreditation for Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS)Textile Exchange standards, and since 2012 for COSMOS and Rainforest Alliance / SAN.

Since 2005 the IOAS also offers a training service relevant to government authorities, accreditation bodies and certification bodies working in the field of conformity assessment of organic agriculture. 

The administrative office of IOAS is in North Dakota, USA but the organisation is also present in the UK, Spain, Germany and Brazil.
