Claims
The sustainability claims and communications that companies want to make need to be truthful and supported by a robust sustainability system.
Sustainability systems enable users to make different types of claims that are consistent with their standard, assurance, monitoring, and traceability systems. These claims range from certification labels on product to a company reporting about its supply chain risks and impacts. We support our members and other market actors to understand and apply good practices for credible claims making.
The ISEAL Sustainability Claims Good Practice Guide sets out good practices for the subset of sustainability claims related to sustainability systems. It has been developed to guide scheme owners in the development and management of their policies and practices for controlling claims and labels related to their systems.
A first version of the guide was published in 2015. Version 2 came out in July 2025 following a 2-month public consultation earlier in the year. Find out more about the revision process.
The 2025 guide has been updated to support scheme owners to navigate the current claims landscape, reflecting changes to the regulatory environment, the variety of claims types that can be controlled and new mediums through which claims can be made. It is designed to help sustainability systems align with the claims requirements of the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Sustainability Systems.
