The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) applied for support from the Innovation Fund to find out more about the possible uses of blockchain for sustainability standards, and to pilot the technology on a certified supply chain. Working with blockchain experts Provenance, the project team carried out a survey of ISEAL members and delivered in-person training on blockchain technology.
They identified a number of hypotheses to test, including:
- ‘Blockchain can enable efficiencies through automatic verification of chain of custody.’
- ‘Blockchain can enable actors at the end of the supply chain to know the origin without needing to know the actors in between.’
- ‘Blockchain can reduce double counting and double auditing in case of multiple certifications.’
