Aluminium Stewardship Initiative achieves ISEAL associate membership

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative has been accepted as an associate member of the ISEAL Alliance. It joins as an organisation whose system meets ISEAL’s entry level criteria in terms of scope, governance and practices.

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s vision is to maximise the contribution of aluminium to a sustainable society. It works towards this vision by defining standards for sustainable performance and chain-of-custody for the aluminium value chain, and promoting measurable and continual improvements.

Welcoming the news, Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, said: “We are delighted to be joining the ISEAL community with a global sustainability standard for the entire aluminium value chain. We are strongly committed to ISEAL's Codes of Good Practice for how we set standards, assure compliance and monitor impacts, as demonstrated by our successful application. In 2019, we will continue our journey towards full ISEAL membership and deepen our internal systems to support the ever-growing uptake of our program. We look forward to sharing insights and learning with fellow ISEAL members and broader stakeholders."

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s associate membership to ISEAL reflects a commitment to credibility and facilitates its transition to full membership, where compliance is demonstrated with ISEAL’s internationally recognised Codes of Good Practice in standard-setting, assurance and impacts.

ISEAL supports associate members through this process to join a distinguished group of full members that include Forest Stewardship Council, Fairtrade International and Marine Stewardship Council.

ISEAL’s Executive Director Karin Kreider, said: “We’re very happy to recognise a robust standard working to transform a challenging sector through common agreement on improved practices. The world is looking to multi-stakeholder standards and certification initiatives to drive change in a range of important and challenging sectors. We look forward to seeing Aluminium Stewardship Initiative progress as it works alongside ISEAL’s wider membership.”

With the announcement, ISEAL’s membership grows to 26 standards organisations operating in diverse sectors that address critical sustainability issues such as biodiversity conservation, resource use, working conditions and producer livelihoods.

As the global membership association for credible sustainability standards, ISEAL supports and challenges sustainability standards to become more effective and brings the standards movement together to scale up its collective impact.

ISEAL strongly encourages any organisation developing or operating a sustainability standards system with a multi-stakeholder approach and a commitment to credible practices to consider joining the ISEAL Alliance. You can find out more information on our membership page.
